As a writer one of the most difficult things you can encounter is you. More specifically, what the normal, non-writers out there call “Real Life” and all of the things come with it:
Job
Friends
Kids
Family
Bills
Ok… Ok… These are all important, very important, but these are all distractions from writing.
I think however the worst distraction most writers will tell you is: The Internet.
Unlike the old time typewriter, the computer, laptop or even touch-pad is connected (normally) to the world wide web. What this means for most of us, is that we end up on social media or researching something on youtube and BAM! We are three hours later into our designated writing time and what are we doing? We are watching cat videos.
If you are a writer then the one thing you are required to do is: WRITE!
So, life will continue to throw hurtles, curve-balls and a million reasons your words can’t hit the page. So, consider the challenge to be that you need to find a way to set the “Real World” aside and let your world flow out so readers can enjoy it.
A very good friend of mine gave me some of the best advice I have ever heard. She treated writing like a job. She would leave her house every morning two hours early for work. She would go to the office and write for those two hours treating it like being an author was her first job. This way she, on a daily basis, dedicated the needed time to making sure she was able to do the job she loved.
However you have to make it happen. Make sure you do just that: Make it Happen!!!
